Casa ECS by Giuseppe Gurrieri Studio rises in a high-environmentally friendly area in Sicily and has a special laboratory for artists in a wonderful place that stimulates their creativity.
The natural configuration of the territory allows for a better appreciation of the gentle slope of the land at the edge of the Mediterranean sea: a series of terraces, retained by dry stone walls, with olive and carob trees growing up on them, fades beyond the horizon.
The main objective of the project was to implement the principle of a low environmental impact intervention on the land. This principle is better observed in the choice of adapting the building to the natural environment and in the energy-saving structure that has been implemented.
A wall covered with local stone has been built, reproducing the typical receding terrace of the area. The terrace generates a natural step that allowed the integration of the building into the environment, creating a noticeable continuity with the country-side view and the traditionally cultivated land.
Thanks to the roof garden on top of the house, it becomes an integral part of the area. Wishing to maintain the historical tradition of the area, two courtyards appear in the northern part of the house as a removal of two land sections.
The extern geometric structure of the house is replicated in the interior. The living room and the laboratory face the courtyards in the north side and the sea in the south side. This choice gives the perception that the landscape crosses the inner space of the house.
A high heat insulation has been ensured by the planning studies, while the use of renewable energy sources has increased the energetic efficiency of the building, making it an eco-friendly structure.
