Ocean-Facing Dwelling In New South Wales Features Giant "Paperclips" Support

by in Architecture

The interesting details of this house built by Austin Maynard Architects in a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, are, without doubt, the curved tubular-steel supports that prop up a first floor that faces out towards the ocean and the city's skyline.

The structure needed a certain level of extra support, as the house has been built on a steeply sloping site in Newcastle's Merewether neighborhood.

The owners desired a house they could grow old in, and added that they would appreciate "a window with a view if possible." The architects proposed a design that provides impressive views from throughout the house and garden.

Therefore, the architects designed the property as a series of tiered volumes that follow the terrain and offer a variety of views, without negatively impacting the neighbors.

An interesting element is the garage, positioned at the base of the property, with a set of metal mesh steps connecting to a path that leads up and around the side of the building towards the main entrance to the center of the house.

Plants are also decorating the stairs and paths and extend across the roof of the garage, ensuring green views on the outdoors.

The house consists of the garage which is the first in a sequence of brick-clad volumes and the second block that contains the bedrooms and a bathroom, with dedicated entrances onto the garden.

In terms of design, the surfaces of the robust, monolithic structures are given a characterful and aged texture by the masonry, which incorporates colorful graffiti-covered bricks.
